Thai Authorities Seize Another 111 Pangolins in Major Sting

The latest raid on a pangolin-trading syndicate pushes 2012 totals (based on media-reported busts) to over 300 pangolins seized and five arrests made in Thailand alone.


In Thailand’s third pangolin bust of the year, another 111 of the animals have been seized in a major sting on an illegal trading operation.

The three-cusped pangolin (Phataginus tricuspis) gets its name from a unique feature found on their brown, keratinous scales: each one has three points (or keels) on the exposed edge – kind of like a Douglas Fir pine cone!

Malaysia: Pangolin Smugglers Fined and Sentenced to One Day in Jail

A pair of pangolin-smuggling ‘businessmen’ have escaped maximum punishment in Malaysia.


Nearly a year after being busted, two men in Malaysia have been convicted of illegally possessing pangolins and it seems having an ‘elderly mother’ to take care of may have won them both a more lenient sentencing.

‘Junk Shop’ Fronts Illegal Pangolin Trade Operation; Arrests Made, Scales Seized

Sadly, it seems the number seven wasn’t so lucky for pangolins this week, as seven kilograms of their scales were seized in Nepal, another seven kg of scales were seized in the Philippines, and a business called ‘Lucky 7′ was found fronting for an illegal pangolin trade operation.


Nepalese police arrested two men found smuggling seven kilograms of pangolin scales in Nepal only days after Palawan officials apprehended three Chinese nationals running an illicit pangolin trade operation out of their ‘junk shop’ front business.
